monument to running water (1974)

-- for Vladimir Nabokov

someone should build monuments to running water,
sing jewelry to its Siberian quicksilver,
melt diamonds and cast sculptures to its blaze.

someone should make a shrine of words:
call running water lingual, soul-colored, brittle,
mercury-skeined.

a monolith of glass should be erected to
celebrate its combed surface

i
could spangle an obelisk.
